SJCAM has announced the SJ30, an 8K dual-lens action camera priced at $264 / £195 / 224 Euros that aims to position itself as a practical everyday recording device rather than an extreme sports tool. The camera pairs two separate imaging sensors for daylight and low-light shooting, and includes features such as a flip touchscreen, magnetic mounting and extended battery life through an optional power handle.
The SJ30 is available now directly from SJCAM’s website, and the pricing puts it well below the GoPro Hero13 Black, which typically sells for around £270 or more in the UK. Whether the SJCAM can match GoPro’s processing and stabilisation quality at that lower price point remains to be seen, but on paper the specification sheet is certainly ambitious.
Dual-lens system for day and night shooting
The headline feature of the SJ30 is its dual-lens imaging system. Rather than relying on a single sensor to handle all lighting conditions, the camera combines a 1/2.0-inch daylight sensor with a larger 1/1.8-inch starlight sensor. The idea is that the camera can switch between lenses depending on ambient light, theoretically delivering better results in darker environments than a traditional single-sensor action camera would manage.
Low-light performance has long been a weakness of action cameras, and it is an area where even premium models like the GoPro Hero13 Black can struggle. SJCAM’s approach of using a dedicated larger sensor for night shooting is an interesting one, though real-world results will depend heavily on the processing pipeline and noise reduction algorithms the camera uses.
On the resolution front, the SJ30 supports 8K recording at 20 frames per second and 4K at 60 frames per second. It is worth noting that 8K at 20fps is not especially practical for most use cases. The frame rate is too low for smooth motion capture, and the resulting file sizes will be substantial. The more usable recording modes are likely to be 4K at 60fps for general shooting, 2K at 120fps for slow motion, and 1080p at up to 240fps for extreme slow-motion capture.
Designed with solo creators in mind
SJCAM has clearly targeted vloggers and solo content creators with the SJ30’s design. The camera features a 2.51-inch flip touchscreen that rotates up to 180 degrees, allowing users to frame themselves when recording without needing a separate monitor or another person behind the camera. This is a practical inclusion that many content creators will appreciate, particularly those shooting travel or lifestyle content on their own.
Voice control is also included, supporting commands in six languages: Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese and Thai. This allows hands-free operation for starting and stopping recordings, which is useful when the camera is mounted on a helmet, chest harness or handlebars.
The camera also supports native vertical video recording at up to 5K resolution at 30fps. This is a nod to the growing demand for portrait-orientation content on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Being able to shoot natively in vertical without cropping from a wider horizontal frame means the full sensor resolution is preserved, which should result in noticeably better quality than simply cropping a landscape recording in post.
Stabilisation and horizon lock
For stabilisation, the SJ30 uses what SJCAM calls SteadyMotion 2.0, which is powered by a six-axis gyroscope. The system is designed to reduce shake and motion blur during handheld or mounted recording. There is also a built-in horizon lock that corrects tilt by up to 45 degrees, keeping footage level even when the camera is angled during cycling, riding or walking over uneven ground.
Stabilisation is one of those areas where the implementation matters far more than the specification, and it is difficult to judge how SteadyMotion 2.0 performs without hands-on testing. GoPro’s HyperSmooth 6.0 and DJI’s RockSteady systems have set a high bar in this category, and SJCAM will need to deliver comparable smoothness to compete effectively. The 45-degree horizon lock is more modest than some competitors that offer full 360-degree correction, but it should be sufficient for most everyday recording scenarios.
Battery life and power options
One area where the SJ30 looks genuinely strong on paper is battery life. The camera has a built-in 2,000mAh battery, and SJCAM claims it can achieve up to seven hours of continuous recording at 4K when paired with the optional 4,200mAh power handle accessory. That is a substantial figure. For comparison, the GoPro Hero13 Black manages around 1.5 hours at 4K with its 1,900mAh Enduro battery, though GoPro does offer various external power solutions as well.
If the seven-hour claim holds up in practice, the SJ30 with the power handle would be a strong option for long recording sessions such as full-day motorcycle rides, cycling routes or travel days where charging opportunities are limited. The charging time is quoted at approximately 50 minutes from empty to full for the internal battery.
Audio and mounting
On the audio side, the SJ30 includes a detachable wind guard for reducing wind noise during outdoor recording. It also supports the SJCAM M4 wireless microphone, which connects with a single click for quick setup. It is worth noting that the camera does not currently support wired microphones, so users who prefer wired audio solutions will need to factor this in. For many vloggers and content creators, a wireless microphone is the more practical choice anyway, but the lack of a wired option is a limitation.
The camera uses a magnetic quick-release mounting system, which allows fast attachment and removal. Magnetic mounts have become increasingly popular in the action camera market for their convenience, and SJCAM describes theirs as using a high-strength magnetic locking interface for secure attachment during active use.
Durability and waterproofing
The SJ30 carries an IPX8 waterproof rating and is rated to 5 metres without any additional housing, making it suitable for use in rain, splashes and shallow water. With the optional waterproof case, the depth rating extends to 30 metres, which covers most recreational diving and snorkelling scenarios.
The operating temperature range is quoted at -20 to 60 degrees Celsius, which should cover most real-world conditions from cold winter rides to hot summer beach shooting. This is a reasonably broad range for an action camera in this price bracket.
