Garmin has added the Fenix 9 to its adventure watch line, sitting alongside the existing Fenix 8 range on the UK site rather than replacing it outright, as Fenix 8 remains listed for sale. This article sets out how the two watches compare on paper, using the specification pages published by Garmin for the Fenix 9 in 43mm and the Fenix 8 47mm AMOLED model. It covers design, display, battery, storage, sensors, health tracking, sports features and the software tools specific to Fenix 9, along with a full specification comparison table, pricing and availability.
Availability and pricing
Fenix 9 is listed at £859.99 for the 43mm titanium version with a fog grey silicone band, part number 010-04761-01. The listing marks it as new stock, available to order from 28 August 2026. Buyers can choose between three case sizes, 43mm, 47mm and 51mm, and three versions: Fenix 9, Fenix 9 Pro and Fenix 9 Pro Solar. A built in inReach satellite connectivity option can also be selected at the point of purchase, alongside a choice of colour and band combinations.
Fenix 8 remains available in five versions across the same three case sizes: a standard model, an AMOLED model, a Solar model, a Pro AMOLED model and a Pro MicroLED model. The 47mm AMOLED version used for this comparison, in titanium with a sapphire lens and a spark orange and graphite silicone band, is priced at £749.99, with a three payment 0 percent interest option available through Klarna. Garmin lists it as ready to ship within one to three business days, and part number 010-02904-11 is shown on the product page.
Design and materials
In the configuration shown, Fenix 9 uses a titanium bezel with a fibre reinforced polymer case and a titanium rear cover, along with a sapphire crystal lens. It measures approximately 43 x 43 x 13.4mm and weighs around 67g fitted with the silicone band, or 44g for the case alone. The colour and band options shown at launch are more limited than those offered for Fenix 8, with a single row of colour swatches displayed on the product page.
Fenix 8 offers a choice of stainless steel or titanium bezel depending on edition, again with a fibre reinforced polymer case and a metal rear cover. Lens material also depends on edition, either Corning Gorilla Glass or sapphire crystal. The 47mm model measures 47 x 47 x 13.8mm and weighs 73g in titanium, 52g for the case alone, or 89g in stainless steel, 59g for the case alone. Garmin’s page shows a considerably wider grid of colour, case material and band combinations for Fenix 8 than for Fenix 9.


Both watches share a 22mm QuickFit band mount, leakproof inductive buttons, and a built in speaker and microphone for wrist based calls and voice notes.
Display
Garmin’s own product page states that the Fenix 9 AMOLED display is more than twice as bright as the one fitted to Fenix 8. The 43mm Fenix 9 carries a 1.3 inch, 33mm, AMOLED display at 416 x 416 pixels. The 47mm Fenix 8 AMOLED carries a larger 1.4 inch, 33.9mm, display at 454 x 454 pixels, which reflects its larger case rather than a difference in panel generation. Both displays are colour touchscreens with a large font option, and both support red shift and colour shift modes for use in low light. Case size affects display size on both watches, so a like for like comparison would need matching case sizes on each model.
Battery and storage
Fenix 9 is rated for up to 10 days in smartwatch mode. Fenix 8 AMOLED is rated for up to 16 days in smartwatch mode, or 7 days with the display left always on, and separately lists a battery saver watch mode of up to 23 days, GPS only tracking of up to 47 hours, and an expedition GPS mode of up to 17 days. Both watches use a lithium ion battery and charge through Garmin’s proprietary plug charger.
Onboard storage rises from 32GB on Fenix 8 to approximately 64GB on Fenix 9, doubling the space available for offline maps, stored music and Connect IQ apps.
Sensors and health tracking
The core sensor package is unchanged between the two watches. Both include GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou satellite systems, along with SatIQ technology, which automatically switches between satellite modes to balance accuracy against battery use. Both carry a Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate monitor, a pulse oximeter for blood oxygen saturation, a barometric altimeter, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, thermometer and ambient light sensor, plus a depth sensor rated to 40 metres and a 10 ATM water rating.
Health monitoring tools are matched across both models too, including sleep coach, sleep score, HRV status, body battery energy monitoring, all day stress tracking, respiration rate, skin temperature, jet lag advisor, women’s health tracking and health snapshot. Neither specification page shows a difference in this area.
Training and sports features

Both watches share an extensive training toolset, including training readiness, training status, VO2 max for running and trail running, real time stamina, endurance score, race predictor, PacePro pacing strategies, ClimbPro ascent planning and Garmin Coach training plans for running, cycling, strength and triathlon. Activity profile support is equivalent too, with both listing more than 100 profiles spanning gym work, running, cycling, swimming, water sports, winter sports, racket sports, team sports, combat sports and diving.
Diving features are effectively identical on paper. Both watches support single gas and nitrox diving, apnea mode, a Buhlmann ZHL-16c decompression model with adjustable gradient factors, customisable conservatism settings, a dive planner and a three axis dive compass.
Fenix 9 adds a dedicated rowing features section that does not appear on the Fenix 8 specification page. It covers indoor rowing VO2 max, functional threshold power, power curves and zones, and lactate threshold, each requiring a compatible rowing machine. Garmin’s marketing material describes this as new performance data for indoor rowing sessions.

Software additions
Two features appear on the Fenix 9 specification list without an equivalent entry on the Fenix 8 page. The first is Garmin Epic, which records multiple days of activity alongside photos and health or performance statistics, and allows the result to be shared as a combined timeline. The second is a Perspective View option added to the mapping and navigation section, which sits alongside existing tools such as point to point navigation, breadcrumb trail, TracBack, NextFork navigation and the ClimbPro ascent planner.
Fenix 9 also adds sports scores to its list of daily smart features, alongside tools already present on Fenix 8 such as stocks, weather forecasts, calendar, and morning and evening reports.
Preloaded road and trail maps are listed as standard across the Fenix 9 range in the specification shown. On Fenix 8, preloaded road and trail maps are limited to Sapphire edition models, with other editions relying on downloadable cartography instead.

Summary of changes
Taken together, the specification pages show Fenix 9 moving away from some of the battery endurance and material choice offered by Fenix 8, in exchange for a brighter display, doubled onboard storage, a built in option for inReach satellite connectivity, and a small number of new software features including Garmin Epic, dedicated rowing performance metrics, sports scores and Perspective View mapping. Preloaded maps also move from a Sapphire only feature on Fenix 8 to a standard inclusion across the Fenix 9 range.
