Garmin’s Fenix 9 Pro launched on 25 August 2026, positioned above the base Fenix 9 and above the outgoing Fenix 8 Pro, which remains on sale in the UK in both its AMOLED and MicroLED forms. Fenix 9 Pro is offered in three case sizes, 43mm, 47mm and 51mm, with an AMOLED display throughout, plus a MIP Solar version in 47mm and 51mm only. This article compares Fenix 9 Pro against its two direct predecessors, Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED and Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED, across case size, weight, display, battery life, storage, materials, connectivity and software, and notes where the base Fenix 8 is relevant, since the Pro tier did not previously exist in 43mm. Figures are drawn from Garmin’s own product pages, the independent specification database published by the5krunner.com, and reporting by garminrumors.com.

Availability and pricing
Fenix 9 Pro launched on 25 August 2026, available to order from 28 August 2026. Garmin’s UK site lists the 47mm titanium AMOLED version, without satellite connectivity, at GBP 949.99. In the United States, Garmin prices the 43mm and 47mm Fenix 9 Pro inReach from USD 1,199.99, and the 51mm from USD 1,299.99, with a 51mm leather inReach configuration listed at USD 1,399.99. UK pricing for the satellite equipped inReach versions, and for the 43mm and 51mm non satellite versions, was not confirmed at the time of writing.
Fenix 8 Pro launched on 3 September 2025, in 47mm and 51mm only, since the Pro tier did not previously come in a 43mm case. Garmin’s UK site currently lists the 47mm AMOLED version at GBP 899.99, below its launch price of around GBP 1,029.99. The 51mm AMOLED launched at around GBP 1,119.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED launched at the same time as the AMOLED Pro, available to order from 8 September 2025, in a single 51mm titanium configuration and a single colourway, a grey case with a black band and an orange sensor guard. It launched at GBP 1,729.99 in the UK, the most expensive Fenix watch Garmin has sold. US reporting in February 2026 noted a price cut on the MicroLED model, to USD 1,699.99, though this had not been extended to UK pricing at the time.
There is no Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED in 43mm or 47mm, and Garmin has not introduced a MicroLED option for Fenix 9 Pro at launch. The Fenix 9 Pro range covers AMOLED and MIP Solar only.
Case size and thickness

Case thickness is one of the more notable changes at 47mm. The plain Fenix 8 is 13.8mm thick. Adding LTE and satellite radios for Fenix 8 Pro increased the 47mm case to 16mm, 2.2mm thicker. Fenix 9 Pro returns to 13.8mm at 47mm, the same thickness as the plain Fenix 8, despite offering the same LTE and satellite radios as an option. Garmin describes the 47mm Fenix 9 Pro as 16 percent thinner than the 47mm Fenix 8 Pro. Adding inReach connectivity does not change the thickness of the Fenix 9 Pro at any size.
At 51mm, the picture is different. The Fenix 8 51mm is 14.7mm thick, the Fenix 8 Pro 51mm is 16.5mm, and the Fenix 9 Pro 51mm sits between the two at 15.8mm, 0.7mm thinner than the Fenix 8 Pro but 1.1mm thicker than the plain Fenix 8. Part of the difference is a larger display fitted to the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro, covered below.
At 43mm, there is no Fenix 8 Pro to compare against, since the Pro tier only reached 47mm and 51mm during the Fenix 8 generation. The Fenix 9 Pro 43mm, at 13.3mm, is half a millimetre thinner than the 43mm Fenix 8 at 13.8mm.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED, available only in 51mm, is thicker again at 17.5mm, a full millimetre more than the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED and 1.7mm more than the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro.
Weight
Weight moves in different directions depending on case size and the material being compared against. At 47mm, Fenix 9 Pro weighs 78g fitted with its band, 56g for the case alone, close to the 47mm Fenix 8 Pro at 77g fitted, 56g case only, an identical case weight. Against the plain Fenix 8 at 47mm, the comparison depends on which material version is owned: Fenix 9 Pro is 5g heavier fitted than the titanium Fenix 8, at 73g, but 2g lighter than the stainless steel Fenix 8, at 80g.
At 51mm, Fenix 9 Pro weighs 99g fitted, 73g case only, heavier than the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro at 90g fitted, 65g case only, a difference attributed to the full titanium case and the larger display. Against the plain Fenix 8 51mm, Fenix 9 Pro is 7g heavier fitted than titanium, at 92g, and 3g lighter than stainless steel, at 102g.
At 43mm, Fenix 9 Pro weighs 62g fitted, 45g case only, close to the titanium Fenix 8 43mm at 60g fitted, 44g case only, and lighter than the stainless steel Fenix 8 43mm at 66g fitted.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED weighs 93g fitted, 68g for the case alone, in its 51mm titanium configuration, around 3g more on the wrist than the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED.
Display and brightness

Display size increases at 51mm only. The plain Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro both use a 1.4 inch, 454 x 454 pixel panel at 51mm, with extra bezel surrounding it. Fenix 9 Pro grows the 51mm display to 1.5 inches at 466 x 466 pixels, the largest screen Garmin has fitted to a Fenix watch. The 47mm panel stays at 1.4 inches and the 43mm panel stays at 1.3 inches across all three generations.
Brightness is the change that applies at every size. Garmin rates the Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED panel at up to 3,000 nits and describes it as twice as bright as the Fenix 8 AMOLED panel. Garmin’s specification pages for the Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED do not publish a nit figure. Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED is brighter again, rated at up to 4,500 nits using more than 400,000 individual LEDs, though this display technology is not available on Fenix 9 Pro at launch.
Case materials, bezel and lens
Every Fenix 9 Pro uses a full titanium case and a titanium bezel, with a sapphire crystal lens on AMOLED versions and a Power Sapphire lens on MIP Solar versions. Fenix 8 Pro, in both AMOLED and MicroLED form, uses a fibre reinforced polymer case with a titanium bezel and a sapphire crystal lens, itself an upgrade over the base Fenix 8, which uses the same polymer case with a stainless steel or titanium bezel and either Corning Gorilla Glass or sapphire crystal depending on edition.
ComfortFit fabric bands are new to Fenix 9 Pro and were not offered on Fenix 8 Pro. The LED flashlight keeps its white and red modes across the range, and Fenix 9 Pro adds a green mode, intended to preserve night vision in low light conditions.
Battery life and storage
Battery life improves by a modest, consistent margin across the Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED range compared with Fenix 8 Pro, and by a smaller margin again compared with the plain Fenix 8. At 47mm, smartwatch mode runs to up to 18 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 15 days, with 8 days always on, for Fenix 8 Pro, and 16 days, with 7 days always on, for the plain Fenix 8. Garmin has not published a separate always on figure for Fenix 9 Pro. Low power or battery saver mode reaches 24 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 19 days on Fenix 8 Pro and 23 days on the plain Fenix 8. Maximum battery GPS mode, the clearest point of comparison since Garmin renamed several of the shorter GPS tracking modes for Fenix 9 Pro, reaches 87 hours against 70 hours on Fenix 8 Pro and 81 hours on the plain Fenix 8. Expedition mode reaches 18 days against 14 days on Fenix 8 Pro and 17 days on the plain Fenix 8.
At 51mm, smartwatch mode reaches up to 31 days on Fenix 9 Pro, against 27 days, with 15 days always on, for Fenix 8 Pro, and 29 days, with 13 days always on, for the plain Fenix 8. Low power mode reaches 42 days against 34 days and 41 days. Maximum battery GPS mode reaches 151 hours against 123 hours and 145 hours. Expedition mode reaches 31 days on Fenix 9 Pro, level with the plain Fenix 8 and 7 days ahead of Fenix 8 Pro.
At 43mm, where there is no Fenix 8 Pro for comparison, smartwatch mode is unchanged at up to 10 days on both Fenix 9 Pro and the plain Fenix 8. Low power mode is unchanged at 15 days, and expedition mode is unchanged at 10 days. Maximum battery GPS mode edges up slightly, from 49 hours to 50 hours.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED stands apart. Despite using the larger 51mm case, which supports 27 days of smartwatch battery on the AMOLED Pro, Garmin rates the MicroLED version at only up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, 4 days with the display always on, because the higher brightness draws considerably more power. In its best accuracy GPS mode, MicroLED is rated at up to 34 hours, and in plain GPS only mode at up to 44 hours, both below the AMOLED Pro’s comparable figures at the same case size.
Storage rises from 32GB on both the plain Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro, including the MicroLED version, to 64GB across every Fenix 9 Pro configuration, including MIP Solar.
Connectivity and satellite features
The plain Fenix 8 connects over Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi only. Fenix 8 Pro, in both AMOLED and MicroLED form, added an LTE and satellite radio stack as standard, enabling two way messaging, LTE LiveTrack, interactive SOS and location check ins through an inReach subscription; every Fenix 8 Pro unit ships with this hardware, whether or not the subscription is active. Fenix 9 Pro takes a different approach: Garmin’s UK product listing shows an inReach connectivity option that can be switched on or off at the point of purchase, with the non satellite version reverting to plain Bluetooth, ANT+ and Wi-Fi connectivity, similar to the base Fenix 8. This makes the non satellite Fenix 9 Pro a genuinely separate, cheaper hardware configuration, rather than a Fenix 8 Pro style unit with the subscription simply left inactive.
Where Fenix 9 Pro inReach and Fenix 8 Pro inReach both carry the LTE and satellite radio stack, Fenix 9 Pro adds two features not present on Fenix 8 Pro: satellite weather forecasts, and Garmin Locate, which lets a chosen contact request the wearer’s location over satellite or LTE.
At 43mm, satellite connectivity is available for the first time, since the Fenix 8 Pro tier never came in that size. This makes the 43mm Fenix 9 Pro inReach the first small sized Fenix with built in satellite messaging.
Fenix 9 Pro MIP Solar
Garmin also sells Fenix 9 Pro with a transflective MIP solar display in place of AMOLED, in 47mm and 51mm only, with no 43mm MIP Solar option. The core software and hardware features match the AMOLED Pro; the differences are the display, the solar charging ring, and the resulting battery gains, along with a small increase in thickness and weight.
The 47mm MIP display measures 1.3 inches at 260 x 260 pixels, smaller and lower resolution than the 47mm AMOLED’s 1.4 inch, 454 x 454 panel. The 51mm MIP display measures 1.4 inches at 280 x 280 pixels, against the 51mm AMOLED’s 1.5 inch, 466 x 466 panel. The MIP models use a Power Sapphire lens rather than plain sapphire crystal.
Battery life is the reason to choose MIP Solar. At 47mm, smartwatch mode rises from 18 days on AMOLED to 21 days on MIP Solar, or up to 34 days with sufficient sun exposure. Maximum battery GPS mode rises from 87 hours to 132 hours, or up to 740 hours with solar. At 51mm the gap without sun is smaller, since AMOLED already reaches 31 days in smartwatch mode against 30 days for MIP Solar before solar charging is counted, rising to up to 57 days with sun. Maximum battery GPS mode at 51mm rises from 151 hours on AMOLED to 186 hours on MIP Solar, or up to 1,000 hours with solar. Garmin’s solar figures assume all day wear with three hours per day of outdoor sun at 50,000 lux.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED in detail
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED uses a separate display technology from both AMOLED and MIP, available only as a 51mm titanium model in a single colourway. Garmin rates its brightness at up to 4,500 nits, using more than 400,000 individual LEDs, ahead of the 3,000 nit figure quoted for Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED. Resolution is 454 x 454 pixels, the same as the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED panel, on a 1.4 inch display, smaller than the 1.5 inch panel fitted to the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED.
The MicroLED model is thicker and heavier than the equivalent AMOLED Pro, at 17.5mm and 68g for the case alone, against 16.5mm and 65g case only for the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED. Aside from the display, case dimensions, weight and battery life, the sensors, software and satellite connectivity match the 51mm Fenix 8 Pro AMOLED.
Garmin has not extended MicroLED technology to the Fenix 9 Pro range. At launch, Fenix 9 Pro is offered only with AMOLED or MIP Solar displays, so the brightest Garmin display technology to date remains exclusive to the Fenix 8 Pro generation, at least for now.
Software features new to Fenix 9 Pro
Most of the training and activity catalogue already exists on the plain Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro. Garmin has said that many of these tools are being extended to existing Fenix 8 watches through software updates, though items tied to the new mapping engine remain specific to the Fenix 9 series. The following features are new to Fenix 9 Pro and did not appear on Fenix 8 Pro or the plain Fenix 8 at launch:
- Garmin Epic Groups, which records and shares multi day activity across a group of people rather than a single wearer
- Perspective View, added to the mapping tools
- Mixed session multisport
- A dedicated rucking workout type, separate from the rucking activity profile that already existed
- Grade adjusted pace based running workouts, building on the grade adjusted pace metric already available
- A full indoor rowing suite: VO2 max, functional threshold power, a power curve and zones, and lactate threshold, each needing a compatible rowing machine
- Sports scores added to the daily smart features list
- Gaming Activity, compatible with the GameOn app
- ComfortFit fabric bands
- Satellite weather and Garmin Locate, on inReach versions
Garmin also described a new mapping engine at launch, saying map panning is around 30 percent faster than the plain Fenix 8 and round trip routing is around 40 percent faster than Fenix 8 Pro. This does not show up as a new checklist item, since both older watches already list mapping and round trip routing among their features; the claimed change is to how quickly those existing tools respond, rather than to the feature list itself. The optical heart rate sensor is unchanged: Fenix 9 Pro, Fenix 8 Pro and the plain Fenix 8 all use the Garmin Elevate Gen 5 sensor.
Sensors and health tracking
Sensor and health tracking hardware is matched across all three watches compared here. Each includes GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou satellite systems with SatIQ multi band optimisation, a pulse oximeter, barometric altimeter, compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, thermometer and ambient light sensor, plus a depth sensor rated to 40 metres and a 10 ATM water rating. Health monitoring tools, including sleep coach, HRV status, body battery energy monitoring, all day stress tracking, respiration rate, jet lag advisor and the Garmin ECG app, are also matched across the three watches.

Summary of changes
Across the range, Fenix 9 Pro brings three consistent hardware changes over Fenix 8 Pro: a return to 13.8mm thickness at 47mm despite keeping satellite connectivity as an option, a brighter AMOLED display rated to 3,000 nits, and double the onboard storage at 64GB. Battery life improves by a small, consistent margin at every size, and the 43mm case size gains satellite connectivity and a full titanium build for the first time, since no 43mm Fenix 8 Pro existed. Software brings a shorter but distinct list of additions, headed by Garmin Epic Groups, Perspective View mapping, an indoor rowing metrics suite, sports scores and satellite weather, alongside a mapping engine Garmin describes as substantially faster at panning and route building than both predecessors.
Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED remains the brightest and most expensive watch across the three generations compared here, at up to 4,500 nits in a single 51mm configuration, though its battery life in smartwatch mode is well below every AMOLED model discussed in this article. Garmin has not carried MicroLED forward into the Fenix 9 Pro range at launch, so buyers wanting the brightest possible display currently choose between the newer 3,000 nit Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED and the older, brighter but shorter lived Fenix 8 Pro MicroLED, rather than a newer MicroLED option.
